While much of the country must bundle up to enjoy a Valentine’s Day outing, we are fortunate this day devoted to love falls at one of the most glorious times of year in Tampa Bay. Below are a few fun ideas to celebrate as a couple, friend group or family, while soaking up our glorious winter weather.
Cycle Dunedin. Dunedin is the perfect starting point for a cycling adventure. Rent a bike from Bicycle Boutique in downtown Dunedin, which sits adjacent to the Pinellas Trail. Pedal to your heart’s content along the trail, explore the quaint downtown or head over to Honeymoon Island. There are so many options in this bike-friendly town. For more places to hit the bike trail, visit westchasewow.com/bike-trails.
Rediscover Water Street. This area of The Channelside District offers a one-mile stroll complete with bougie hotels, trendy restaurants and the ever-evolving Sparkman Wharf. The area also just became the first WELL-certified community in North America for its promotion of health and well-being across all aspects of the neighborhood, and it warrants a visit. On the third Sunday of the month, they host an outdoor market. Or head there for a bite to eat from one of the many dining options.
Stroll the Riverwalk. The Tampa Riverwalk offers a continuous 2.6-mile waterfront walkway along the banks of the Hillsborough River with gorgeous views of the city. You can also take in several art installations along the route, stop for a bite from one of the many eateries at Armature Works, and cap off the day by grabbing an adult beverage from Ulele’s outdoor bar and then settling in to enjoy the views from their Sunset Lawn. Or, take in a view of Tampa’s skyline from Armature Works’ rooftop bar, M.Bird.
Hop aboard the Pirate Water Taxi. Another great way to explore Downtown Tampa is by water. The Pirate Water Taxi all-day pass offers a leisurely boat ride with 14 stops along the Hillsborough River, including stops that offer convenient access to downtown’s numerous attractions, museums and restaurants. Tickets may be purchased on board at any stop, at the ticket booth located at Stop #7, or online at piratewatertaxi.com (which offers a discount). The all-day pass allows you to hop on and off the taxi at any time for unlimited trips all day.
Take in the St. Pete mural scene. St. Pete’s Central Arts District is home to an impressive number of murals between the 300 and 700 blocks of Central Avenue. Download the PixelStix app for a mural map and information on each mural. Florida CraftArt also offers a guided mural walking tour on Saturdays or hop aboard the new Star Trolley tour, which offers a one-of-a-kind mural experience on the last Sunday of the month. Learn more at stpeteartsalliance.org.
Kayak to Caladesi. Caladesi Island State Park is a beach paradise perfect for spending a winter day with that special someone. Skip the ferry crowds and enjoy a leisurely kayak ride to the island. Sail Honeymoon on the Dunedin Causeway rents one- and two-person kayaks that are perfect for exploring the shallow, protected waters that lead to Caladesi. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy before making the return journey.
Play tourist in Tarpon Springs. The Sponge Docks isn’t just a great place to get authentic Greek food; it is also the perfect spot to play tourist. Browse the gift shops that line Dodecanese Boulevard, take a spin through the Spongeorama Museum and then set sail on a romantic boat ride down the Anclote River.
Go head-to-head in miniature golf. Feel like a kid again while putting your way through giant waterfalls, mysterious caves and tropical rainforests at Congo River Golf in Clearwater. Evening hours offer the perfect ambiance for a little friendly competition. For a more sophisticated miniature golf experience, head to PopStroke, a golf and casual dining experience in Lutz. Remember, it is only fun if you keep score!
Picnic at the Gizella Kopsick Arboretum. This unique arboretum located along North Shore Drive in St. Petersburg features two acres of Zen-like waterfront property that is home to more than 500 palms and is the perfect setting for a picnic for two or more! For more perfect picnic spots, visit westchasewow.com/picnic-spots.
Go horseback riding. Even the most inexperienced rider is welcome to take part in a relaxing, guided trail ride at In the Breeze Ranch. The trails lead riders through Florida’s natural habitat, winding past a creek, with ample opportunity for wildlife viewing.
Stick close to home. February is also the perfect month to take advantage of the numerous al fresco dining options right here in Westchase that are just a short walk, bike ride or car ride away.
Whatever option you choose, we hope all our readers enjoy spending time with their loved ones this Valentine’s Day.
