Summertime Tennis Opportunities Abound
By Mike Larscheid, Westchase Tennis Pro
There’s one month till school is out, so sign up for tennis and
activity camp now. Activity Blast will run for 10 weeks and the
Tennis Camps will run for nine weeks, missing the week of the Fourth
of July.
Sandy's Little Slammers is a program for 5-7-year-olds and involves
one hour of court time per day.
Skill Acquisition is for 8-12-year-olds. This program runs for two
hours on the court and is followed by lunch and swimming. Afterwards
we are back on the courts for more fun games to wrap up the day.
The Elite Academy is for the tournament player, ages 10-18. The
program starts at 9 a.m. and wraps up at 2:30 p.m. Stroke
production, fitness, tactical training and match play are the
everyday essentials to the program.
All three parts of the summer tennis program are limited to 12
participants per week. Sign up now to get a spot. Participants
should bring a lunch, swimsuit, towel, water bottle, sunscreen and
any extra clothing they might need.
A new part of the program is going to be summer camps for the
parents. USPTR Staff Pro Brett Johnson will be coaching an adult
program during the same weeks as summer camp for the kids. Mondays
and Wednesdays will be the beginner to 3.0 group and Tuesdays and
Thursdays will be designated for 3.5 and up. Friday will be a Round
Robin for anyone who was signed up for the week. There is a minimum
of four needed for each group and a maximum of eight. Come on out
and join the fun!
The Tennis Net-work is being constructed and I would like to ask for
more help on your part. If you are interested in receiving tennis
information via e-mail, please fill out a questionnaire at the
Westchase Swim and Tennis Center.
Westchase tennis player Megan Broderick is now playing college
tennis at the University of Kentucky. Just recently Megan was named
the SEC Freshman of the Week.
She is the only women's tennis player this year to win a SEC award
three times. She currently holds a 17-4 singles record. Megan played
most of the year at number two singles and has recently moved up to
number one, where she has a record of 4-2. Her big weekend where she
won her third SEC award came after beating Georgia and Tennessee.
Both players were ranked nationally at 52 and 64 respectfully. Check
