As we enter May, our final full month of the school year, we
celebrate our wonderful teachers and prepare to send our fifth grade
Wizards on their journey to middle school.
Westchase Elementary Students
Teach Faculty
By Kaylin Villeme
The Fifth Grade Student Council at Westchase Elementary
broke new ground last month: the students taught the
teachers!
Using the technology of the computer lab, eight
representatives of the council showed faculty how to
maneuver through Clicky's Web World and NetSmartz Rules.
These programs teach young students how to be safe on
the Internet. Teachers received a certificate upon
completion of the course, which was held after school
hours.
The student teachers were: Jenna Piontek, Tori Falconer,
Samantha Mitchell, R.J. Rodriquez, Jesus Sanchez, Alex
Wilsey, Divya Bhansali and Jack Morton.
The student council representatives were very proud of
their accomplishment and the teachers were appreciative
of the students' technological expertise! |

| Teacher Appreciation Week is May 5-9. The Westchase
Elementary PTA will be honoring our teachers and staff
throughout the week in some very special ways. This
year’s theme is Fun in the Sun! Please take time during
the week to show your fabulous Westchase teachers and
staff how much they mean to you! Our graduating fifth
graders will be celebrating the end of their time at
Westchase Elementary with several special activities and
events. On Friday, May 23, after a continental breakfast
and some special time signing yearbooks with their
friends, the fifth graders will enjoy a field day. The
end-of-the-year field trip to Busch Gardens will be on
Friday, May 30. Awards will be given out to the fifth
graders on Monday, June 2, at 8:30 am. The Fifth Grade
Banquet will be held on Tuesday, June 3. For more
information, please contact Michele Granholm at 386-2862
or via e-mail at
mcg@kammfire.com.
The PTA will be hosting the Year End Mentor Celebration
on May 15 at 8:15 a.m. in the multipurpose room. All the
mentors who volunteered this year – as well as their
students – are invited to this special program. The PTA
would like to thank those volunteers who helped our
students in need. |

The final book fair of the school year will be held May
20-23. This is a perfect opportunity to stock up on those summer
books that you would like your child to read. If you are
interested in volunteering to help at the book fair, contact
Nancy Ostrowski at
jnoski@verizon.net.

Join us for Read to Me Night on Thursday, May 22. Come in
your pajamas and hear professional story teller Katie Adams
share her tale, News from Storytown. This is a wonderful
opportunity for parents to share with their children the value
of reading. The program will begin at 7:15 p.m. The book fair
will be open until 7 p.m. that evening. Purchase a new book,
snuggle up with your child and read prior to the presentation.
The last general meeting of the PTA will also be that evening at
7 p.m. The new 2008-2009 PTA board will be voted on and the
final budget will be reviewed.
Finally, don’t miss out on your opportunity to purchase your
tickets for Westchase Elementary’s production of Oliver! Our
talented Wizards will be performing May 27-30 at Alonso High
School. Mrs. Lewis, Mr. King and all the children have been
working hard all year preparing for the big show. It will be an
extravaganza you won’t want to miss!
